Righteous religious leaders have pressured Congress into legislating laws prohibiting the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverage. The nation is "dry". This was a �noble gesture" that only increased societies' thirst and encouraged gangster activity to fulfill the demand. Sympathetic law enforcement is easily bribed and a feeling of moral apathy develops in society. Women are wearing less and experiencing more. The young are dancing to the new sound called "Jazz" while religious zealots cry sin and damnation.
By the end of 1929, these issues consolidated into one big disaster. The stock market crashed and the newly rich and almost everyone else became the newly destitute. Businesses close. America experiences its worse recession in history. Most of the workforce is unemployed and those workers who were lucky enough to have jobs are often treated like second citizens.
